Art in Alsea

art_banner_edited.jpg

The Art Committee of Alsea Community Effort (ACE) has been active for the last 10 years offering exhibitions and workshops for the public in the Alsea Community Library and Community Room. ACE has utilized several generous grants, including from Siletz Tribal Charitable Foundation, Oregon Community Foundation, Friends of the Corvallis Benton County Public Library, and Benton County Cultural Coalition.

Second Permanent Art Installation at the

Alsea Community Library:

The ACE Art Committee held the “Unveiling” of Uyen-Thi Nyugen’s oil painting, “Storytime,” on Saturday, October 19, 2024 at the Library. With generous donations from the Corvallis Benton “Friends of the Library” and the Siletz Tribe, the public was invited to come enjoy food and entertainment while meeting the artist, Uyen-Thi Nyugen, of Cottage Grove, Oregon.

Steve Moore and Michelle Dedman entertained with great jazzy “oldies” and the Thyme Garden catered the tasty finger foods and drinks.

Along with ACE board members, community folks and the artist herself installed her lovely painting permanently on a prominent wall of the early childhood area of the library.

“Storytime” is a perfect fit for our library - a real conversation starter, full of details depicting Alsea’s history,
culture, and natural beauty.

First Permanent Art Installation at the

Alsea Community Library:

On June 22, 2024, community members gathered at the Alsea Community Library to be the first to see its new permanent collage art piece. The artwork, titled "Alsea Valley View", was created by Norma Eaton of Salem, Oregon, using her painted paper collage mixed media process. It has since been installed inside the library, high on the east wall.

The Art Committee of Alsea Community Effort created a Call to Artists in the Fall of 2023 to solicit art depicting the Alsea Valley. Out of nine submissions, Norma was selected as the first artist to create a commissioned art piece. “More than 30 community members and guests attended the unveiling ceremony,” said Meredith Howell, President of Alsea Community Effort. “Norma’s beautiful creation captures the essence of the Alsea Valley being carved by the Alsea River and nestled into the western slopes of the Coast Range…just what our committee was striving for in a permanent installation!” added Kathy Plaza, Art Committee Chairperson.

Special thanks to the Friends of the Corvallis-Benton County Public Library and the Oregon Community Foundation Small Arts & Culture Grant for their support for this project.
